Been a regulating and controlling body of broadcasting Industry in Nigeria, National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has fined NigeriaInfo 99.3fm Five Million Naira For Unprofessional Broadcast.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the National Broadcasting Commission said, “it noted with grave concern, the unprofessional conduct of Nigeria Info 99.3FM, Lagos, in the handling of the Programme, “Morning Cross Fire”, aired on August 10, 2020, between 8.30am and 9.00am”.
According to NBC , The station(NIGERIAINFO 99.3FM) provided its platform for the guest, Dr. Mailafia Obadiah, to promote unverifiable and inciting views that could encourage or incite to crime and lead to public disorder.
NBC noted that, “Dr. Mailafia Obadia’s comments on the “Southern Kaduna Crisis”, were devoid of facts and by broadcasting same to the public, Nigeria Info 99.3FM, is in violation of the following sections of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code”
The fine the NBC notes is expected to serve as a deterrent to all other broadcast stations in Nigeria who are quick to provide platform for subversive rhetoric and the expositions of spurious and unverifiable claims, to desist from such.
The Commission further sounded warning maintaining that, it will not hesitate to suspend the Broadcast Licence of broadcast stations that continue to breach the Code.
Meanwhile, the, Northern Governors Forum have stated their reasons Why they Want Obadiah Malafiya’s Comments where in he alleged that “…one of the Northern Governors is the Commander of Boko Haram in Nigeria”, investigated.
Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Simon Bako Lalong who is also the Governor of Plateau State said “the Forum is concerned about the weighty allegation made by Dr. Mailafiya which must be thoroughly investigated”.
Describing the allegations as weighty and needed to be investigated, Chairman of the Forum said, it’s forum which has been working with the Federal Government, security agencies, community, civil society, traditional and religious leaders as well as development partners to defeat terrorism, banditary and other forms of crimes in the region, finds the allegation by Dr. Mailafiya very weighty which deserves further investigation.
The Governor expressed concered that, such allegations are not smear campaigns or attempts to discourage the Northern Governors who are putting in their best to bring and end to insecurity in the region.
He maintain that the Forum does not, and will not support the activities of any criminal group, because they as Governors and their families are also not spared as was recently witnessed when the convoy of Governor Babagana Zullum of Borno State was attacked.
He has therefore urged Dr. Mailafiya and indeed all citizens with useful information on the activities of criminals and terrorist groups to assist security agencies and Governments at all levels with such intelligence for proper actions.
Recalled that, the day of Mailafiya’s invitation by the DSS, Sawabiya had reported how sympathisers of Dr obadiah mailafia kept waiting for his release from the DSS office at the vicinity of their office till his release where he spoke with the press saying, “killing must stop, every Nigerian child is my child” said Mailafiya.
